University Faculty and Researchers’ Forum to Address Synthetic Drugs

The International Consortium of Universities for Drug Demand Reduction (ICUDDR) as a grantee of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) has been asked to initiate engagement with university faculty and researchers regarding their views, input, and recommendations on solutions for the Global Synthetics Issue. The recommendations to be developed will focus on the three areas of the Coalition Work Groups: (1) Production and Trafficking, (2) Data on emerging drug trends and patterns, and (3) Public Health Responses.

ICUDDR plans to organize and host the following activities:

  1. Regional Focus Groups (Jan-March 2024): Regional Focus groups will be organized across the 6 regions of ICUDDR (Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin American and the Caribbean, Middle East, United States and Canada). Each group will develop and collate recommendations. These meetings can be joined by any university or researcher. 
  2. Report recommendations to Host Governments (April-June 2024): Organize 6 meetings, 1 within each region with selected university faculty and researchers and Government Officials to present to the governments the report developed from the focus groups with university recommendations. Global Synthetics Listening Sessions for Governments - Recordings: 
    1. African Region
    2. Latin America and The Caribbean Region 
    3. Asia Pacific Region 
    4. US and Canada Region
    5. Europe Region 
    6. Middle East Region 
  3. Final Report to INL and Website: The governments comments will be incorporated into a final report and will be sent to INL and posted on the Coalition website.
